BRAINWASHED: Sex-Camera-Power World Premiere at the 2022 Sundance Festival
The Sundance Film Festival will present the world premiere of BRAINWASHED: Sex-Camera-Power by award-winning independent filmmaker Nina Menkes. The feature-length documentary will appear in the Premieres section. In BRAINWASHED, Menkes leads viewers on a mind-blowing journey that will forever reframe cinematic history. Using key scenes from canonical Hollywood films and cult classics, she reveals how shot design—and even sound—contribute to sexual abuse and employment discrimination against women in the film industry and beyond. These techniques and effects have been dubbed the Menkes List. Maria Giese, who instigated the groundbreaking 2015 industry-wide federal investigation of sex discrimination in Hollywood, is a co-producer of the film.
The BRAINWASHED team includes creative producer Inka Rusi of Onerva Pictures; editor and creative producer Cecily Rhett; and director of photography Shana Hagan, ASC. Emmy nominated Sharon Farber is the film’s composer. Onerva Pictures’ co-founder Tanja Rusi has designed and art directed the website, logo and INSTAGRAM marketing for BRAINWASHED as well as being Line Producer of the London shoot for the documentary in October 2019, shooting at the BFI Film Festival and filming an interview with the renowned film theorist Laura Mulvey, who first coined the term ‘the male gaze’.
BRAINWASHED is presented by Tim Disney, Susan Disney Lord, Abigail Disney & Menkesfilm, with additional support from the CalArts Center for New Performance.
